Not All Overwater Bungalows Are Worth It
The overwater bungalow is one of the most photographed accommodation categories in travel. It is also one of the most misrepresented.
The image is reliable: a structure on stilts above a clear lagoon, a deck extending over the water, the horizon unobstructed in every direction. What the image does not convey is that the experience of staying in one varies so significantly between properties that the category label itself tells you almost nothing useful.
We have stayed in overwater bungalows that were among the most beautiful places we have ever slept. We have also stayed in ones that were disappointing in ways that matter: poor water clarity directly beneath the deck, structures too close together for any real privacy, interiors that have not been updated in a decade despite room rates that would suggest otherwise.
The difference is not always captured in price. And it is almost never visible in the listing photographs.
What the Photographs Are Not Showing You
Destination photography is produced to show a property at its absolute best: optimal light, full occupancy staged with care, specific angles selected to maximize space and minimize any visual friction. This is not deceptive so much as it is promotional, and it is universal across the industry.
What drone photography of overwater bungalows consistently omits is proximity. The distance between your deck and your neighbor's deck. The sight lines from neighboring structures into yours. The density of the bungalow cluster and whether "privacy" in the property description translates to any meaningful experience of it.
It also tends to omit the quality of the water directly beneath and around the structure, which varies more than most travelers anticipate. Some properties sit above genuinely clear, snorkel-worthy water teeming with marine life accessible directly from the deck. Others are built over shallows with poor visibility, or adjacent to sand bars that turn murky with any current or disturbance. Still others are positioned in lagoons where the water is beautiful but the house reef requires a boat transfer to reach.
These are not minor distinctions for a honeymoon where the overwater experience is central to why you chose the destination.
The Factors That Actually Determine the Experience
Water clarity and depth. The best overwater bungalows are built above water with genuine clarity and enough depth to accommodate snorkeling directly from the deck steps. This is what the photographs imply. It is not always what exists. We assess this per property, not per category.
Orientation. Which direction does the deck face? A sunrise-facing bungalow and a sunset-facing one offer entirely different experiences. For a couple who plans to spend time on the deck in the morning, orientation matters. For a couple whose priority is evening light on the water, it matters differently. Many booking platforms do not surface this information clearly.
Privacy from neighboring units. The spacing between overwater villas varies dramatically between properties. Some developments were built with generous separation and careful positioning so that sightlines between decks are minimal. Others were designed to maximize inventory, which means the deck that photographs as your private slice of ocean is, in practice, clearly visible from several neighboring structures.
Interior quality relative to the rate. Overwater accommodation sits across a wide spectrum of interior quality that the room rate does not reliably predict. A property that commands top-tier pricing based on location and brand recognition may have rooms that have not been meaningfully updated in years. The materials, the fixtures, the quality of the bed, the functionality of the indoor-outdoor flow: these are things that matter over the course of a week-long honeymoon stay.
Structural sound. Water sounds differently depending on what is beneath you and how the structure was built. Some overwater bungalows have a gentle ambient quality from the movement below that is genuinely pleasant. Others, particularly older structures, transmit more noise and movement than couples expect, which can affect sleep over several nights.
Destinations That Do It Well and Ones That Require More Selectivity
The Maldives remains the global benchmark for overwater accommodation, and for good reason. The atoll geography produces lagoons of unusual clarity and depth, and the best properties were designed with the water experience as the central organizing principle. That said, quality varies meaningfully even within the Maldives, and the brand recognition of a property does not guarantee that a specific villa delivers on the category promise.
Bora Bora, in French Polynesia, originated the modern overwater bungalow concept and the lagoon there, a UNESCO-listed body of water surrounded by a barrier reef, is genuinely extraordinary. The category is well-developed here, but the market has matured to the point where some of the most photographed properties are operating on infrastructure that is decades old. Newer properties and recently renovated villas tend to deliver a significantly better physical experience.
Southeast Asia has a growing number of overwater options in destinations including Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Quality is less consistent here, and the lagoon environments are variable. There are genuinely beautiful examples, particularly in the Philippines and in parts of Indonesia, but they require more specific selection rather than a category assumption.
The Caribbean has fewer true overwater options than most travelers expect, largely because the reef ecosystems that make overwater construction possible are more restricted. What exists tends to be in Belize, where the Barrier Reef provides the necessary conditions. The experience there is different in character from the Indo-Pacific options but can be remarkable for the right couple.
When an Overwater Bungalow Is Not the Right Choice
This is a conversation we occasionally have with clients, and it is always a better conversation to have before booking than after.
Some couples, when they honestly examine what they want from a honeymoon, are not particularly oriented toward spending time on or in the water. They want beautiful surroundings, excellent food, a sense of luxury and privacy, but the specific experience of being over a lagoon is not central to their vision.
In those cases, a garden villa or beachfront villa at the same property often delivers a better overall experience at a lower cost, and the funds redirected elsewhere in the trip budget yield more meaningful returns. A private pool on a beach, with direct sand access and a more expansive outdoor living area, can be preferable to a deck above water for couples whose priority is the land rather than the lagoon.
The overwater bungalow is aspirational in a way that can override honest preference assessment. We find it useful to ask couples directly: when you picture the moment you most want from this trip, are you in the water, or are you on the beach?
What We Look For When We Recommend
When we put an overwater property on a client's itinerary, it reflects specific knowledge about that property's water quality, privacy configuration, interior condition, and orientation. It reflects, in most cases, a stay or a site inspection that gave us first-hand familiarity with what the experience actually delivers.
This is not something that can be replicated by reading reviews, which reflect averages across a wide range of guest profiles and expectations. A guest who has never stayed in an overwater bungalow and finds the property generally beautiful will leave a different review than a couple on their honeymoon for whom the water quality is central to the experience they came for.
The distinction between a good overwater bungalow and an excellent one is meaningful. The distinction between the right overwater bungalow for a specific couple and the one that photographs well but disappoints in practice is even more meaningful.
That is the kind of knowledge we bring to this decision.
